Representation Matters

Following the recent trailer of the live-action Little Mermaid movie, the Internet is abuzz with videos of Black girls reacting to Halle Bailey as Ariel, with emotions ranging from shock to utter joy. While young audiences in recent times have been introduced to modern princesses such as Tiana and Moana, the reaction of these young Black girls has made clear that depictions of non-White princesses have been the exception, not the norm, for far too long.

Given the proven role of the fairy tale in shaping the self-image of children, it is my hope that More Than a Crown is one small step in ensuring that young children, particularly those of color, “see” themselves as the royalty – and developing leaders – they are.
